Cinnamon Sugar Donuts Recipe

These donuts are perfect for dipping in coffee or hot chocolate. In fact, all donuts are perfect for dipping in coffee or hot chocolate. But these especially. Baked donuts have a cake like texture which makes them not get too soggy when you dip them. Also, baked donuts are a lot healthier than fried. This recipe is a little bit better than your average baked donut as well because I used half whole wheat flour.

Usually baked donuts have more of a thicker density and aren't as fluffy. So I experimented with these and added extra baking powder and salt (the rising agents) and what resulted was a fluffier donut. Perfection.

Makes 14 donuts

Ingredients

For Donuts
10 tablespoons unsalted butter at room temp
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1 tablespoon plus 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For Topping
5 tablespoons melted butter
3/4 cups sugar
2 tablespoons cinnamon

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease donut pans thouroughly.

2.  In large bowl mix together flours, baking powder, salt, nutmeg and cinnamon.

3. In medium bowl beat together sugar and melted butter. Then add eggs, milk and vanilla extract. Mix until combined.

4. Add wet ingredients to dry and mix until combined.

5. Using a spatula, scoop batter into a gallon sized ziplock bag and then snip off the end. Pipe batter into donut pans so that the pans are 3/4 way full. Alternatley, you may spoon the batter into the pans. It's a bit messy but the donuts will taste the same.

6. Bake for 15 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.

7. Remove from oven and flip donut pan over onto a cooling rack. Tap the pan gently to remove donuts. Allow to cool slightly for a minute or two.

8. To top donuts, mix together sugar and cinnamon. Brush donuts with melted butter and then sprinkle cinnamon sugar mixture on top!

  1. We made these donuts tonight. They got rave reviews from the hubby and kids. The texture wasn't quite like a store bought donut, but delicious none the less. Great recipe! I'm sure we'll be making these again soon.
